The wave wall

Remember the green photo I posted a while back? Or the iceberg? Both photos were from the Opera House. Here is a photo of the Opera House's wave wall. This is what, Snøhetta, the architects say about it: The wave wall: Opera and ballet are young art forms in Norway. These art forms evolve in an international setting. The Bjørvika peninsula is part of a harbour city, which is historically the meeting point with the rest of the world. The dividing line between the ground "here" and the water "there" is both a real and symbolic threshold. This threshold is realised as a large wall on the line of the meeting between land and sea, Norway and the world, art and everyday life. This is the threshold where the public meet the art.

Kiosk

In 1894, Bertrand Narvesen opend his first Narvesen kiosk, maybe this was it? There are two of these old kiosks next to the ice rink in Spikersuppa (Skating. Dreaming.). I have tried to find some information about these beautiful, green kiosks, but I haven't succeeded. Do you know anything about them?

Old Aker Church

Gamle Aker Kirke (Old Aker Church) is Oslo's oldest remaining building and the only remaining church for the Middle Ages. It is assumed that it was built around the year 1150. It is a stone church, built as a three-naved Roman-style basilica. The church has been pillaged and ravaged by fire several times. The oldest part of the surrounding churchyard dates back to the 12th century, and it is said that the church is built over an old silver mine.

Karl Johan

Se min kjole

I'm not a typical dress person, but this is my favorite if-I-was buying-a-dress-store! I walk past this store whenever I'm in the neighbourhood, just to dream and drool! If you're in Oslo and need a new dress for a summer party make sure to stop by Coast, either at Majorstua or close to Nationaltheatret.

The North Pole

The north pole isn't that far away! Just take the 11, 12 or 13 tram to Sandaker and a little further up the road is the little area called Nordpolen (the north pole). The place is named after a restaurant that was here until the 1950s.

Eldorado

For movie enthusiasts it might have been a shame that the Eldorado cinema in Torggata was shut down last year. Book lovers might say it was good news, because the plan for the old cinema is to open up a new, HUGE book store! It will include, like many other book stores, a coffee shop but also a restaurant in the back yard. What I think is cool is that the initiator are planning to keep the pop corn machines and give out free pop corn to the children (and the grown ups I hope?). They will also save the cinema chairs and scatter them around the store for people to rest in. The book store's name will be Eldorado, like the cinema, and therefore also keep the beautiful copper dome and street facade.

Another Sunday, another sunny day, another stroll in the city!

Silence

One silent morning in Torshovparken. Very different from Torshovparken in summertime, when the bandstand in the center of this photo is filled with school bands and orchestras. Be sure to visit this park 1st of june, for the Musikkfest Oslo 2013. I will try to remind you later!

Work out!

It is still a little cold outside, but spring is here and the slippery slope is (almost) gone. You know what that means? It's time to start the outdoor work out, just like these two girls have. Okay.. I'll start on Monday!

Barnegalleriet

Olaf Ryes plass is a square and park at Grünerløkka. The square is surrounded by cafés, bars and restaurant. Grünerhagen is one of the bars, only open in the summer. Here covered in children's drawings. Very nice!

Boulevard périphérique

The parisians have the Boulevard périphérique, Oslo have ring road 1, 2 and 3. Ring road 3, the outer ring road is approximately 18 km long, going from Lysaker in west, through Sinsenkrysset to Ryen in east. Here from Økern one Monday in March.

Inspired

Last time I was browsing through Eric Tenin's blog, ParisDailyPhoto, I saw a photo I really liked (this). I felt a little inspired and took today's photo as a result. It's Telegrafbygningen, the Telegraph building, in Kongens gate, a parallel street to Karl Johan in the city center. Telegrafbygningen was built in the 1920's to house the Norwegian Telecom's administration. At that time, the building was one of Norway's nerve centers, and in order to be fireproof the interior were made from Norwegian marble, more stone and concrete.

SERIous studying

Senter for Rettsinformatikk, SERI (or Norwegian Research Center for Computers and Law) at the University of Oslo is very proud of their library, the Computer Law Library. The library has special collections in the area of computer law and subjects like privacy, telecommunications law, electronic commerce and copyright. Every spring, SERI is the host of the very famous Hula Party for all of SERI's students, researchers and employees. The party is held right in the middle of SERI's heart, the library. Here's from SERI's library and Hula Party last week! Now it's only another week before SERI's next big event, the birthday celebration for Terje Terminal. Talk about some SERIous studying!

On the inside

A while back I posted a photo of an iceberg, asking if anyone knew what building it was. Today's photo is from inside the iceberg (or inside the Oslo Opera House if you like). The Opera House is full of detailed (green) design and different materials, eye candy for a photo fanatic. Expect to see more photos from the Opera House!

Filipstad

From west, the European route E18 takes you to Oslo. It takes you past Filipstad, one of Oslo's ports where the ferry to Kiel departs from. The railway used to be part of the train line from Drammenbanen, but today this line is used mainly for freight.

Female funnel

As it is the International Women's Day today, I should post a photo with some sort of relevance to the topic. In the media today, well known debates and articles about gender equality, where they call for honesty about what women renounce if they choose to work part-time and questions like "what happens to Norway when the balance of power tilts in favor of women and we no longer have equality, but female dominance?" flourish. A debate I didn't expect was whether the best thing grown up family fathers can do for women is to be real men - that is to get sterilized. So, when I was looking through my (not so impressive) database of photos waiting to be posted I found this one of a huge funnel. At the time of capture I didn't really know what to say about it or when to blog it, but considering the unexpected debate about sterilization, I think today's photo is quite suitable.

Where industry meets residential area

Løren and Hasle are two areas east in Oslo where, like many other places in the city, the focus is on residential development. Frydenberg is a new, up and coming area with many apartment buildings built around an old factory from 1935. Today the factory accomodates Frydenberg secondary school. I like the mix and match of old and new, red brick and white concrete.

Skyggespill

I love the pattern made by the shadows mixed with the windows and balconies on this building in Finnmarksgata.

Pink

As spring is on its way, the snow is melting. Yet, there are some patches left and the kids of Oslo knows how to make the most of it! Here are a couple of pink dressed girls in Tøyenparken one sunny Sunday afternoon!

The Scream

I walk past the The National Gallery almost every morning. One day the other week I noticed that they have painted their entrance. And it's not just any painting that they have copied, it is Edvard Munch's famous "SKRIK" to mark their ongoing exhibition "Scream" through the magnifier. Quite the cool entrance, don't you think?

Lille Tøyen Hageby

Perfect spring weather today, bright sunshine and blue skies. I have spent the day the way I love in spring: outside, walking and exploring the city I live in. Today, I stumbled across a little city in the city, Lille Tøyen Hageby. Lille Tøyen Hageby is a garden city built between 1917 and 1922 to alleviate the housing shortage in the capitol, following the model of English garden cities. Such a calm and idyllic place, it must have been heaven to be able to sit outside in the sun, reading a book like that lady did today.

Saturday Night Shopping

Who spends a Saturday night at IKEA? A lot of people it seems, including this photo's photographer! In 2009, IKEA at Furuset in Oslo was estimated to have about 90 000 visitors per week. There is no need to think the amount of people going there are any less 4 years later. In 2012, all IKEA's warehouses had 690 millions visitors. That is a lot of Billy book shelves sold!
